Boldrup Museum
Small agricultural museum in a thatched smallholder's farm near Nørager that shows rural life around 1900 with animals and a garden.
Over het museum
Boldrup Museum is located in a small smallholder's farm (husmandssted) south of Nørager in Himmerland. Kristen Sørensen Mikkelsen, known as Kræn, acquired the former residence of a larger four-winged farm in 1891, after its owner had moved to his lands elsewhere. Besides farming, he earned extra income as a wood carver and bricklayer; there was also a tailor's workshop in the house. In 1897 the Westerhuset was added as a stable and storage for hay and straw, and the barn followed only in 1957.
The farm included a good ten tønder land, about six hectares, including meadows, bog and heath. That was enough for small-scale livestock with cows, pigs, chickens and sheep. In the 1960s, farming was gradually abandoned and the farm was step by step converted into a museum.
Based on interviews and photographs, the thatched three-winged complex is now furnished largely as Kristen and his two daughters lived in it. Old Danish domestic animal breeds as well as vegetable, herb and flower beds give a lively impression of everyday life for a family in the countryside around 1900. The museum is now part of Nordjyske Museer and offers numerous learning programs for daycare centers and schools, seasonal activities, and overnight stays in shelter huts.
