Borgmestergården
Renaissance merchant's house from 1601 in Nyborg housing the city history museum, with exhibitions on daily life around 1600, a Kaffestue and free admission.
Over het museum
The farmstead on Slotsgade was built around 1601 by Nyborg's mayor and wholesale merchant Mads Lerche, facing the castle. The two-story half-timbered front building served the family as residence and official seat. His son Jacob Lerche, who took over the trading business, added two side wings in 1637 and 1643, creating a stately three-winged complex. It is now considered one of the best-preserved merchant's houses of the Danish Renaissance.
After the end of the Lerche era in 1680, the district administrator lived in the house in the 18th century. In the 19th century the property was divided among several owners, soldiers were quartered there, and a smithy and numerous outbuildings were added. A white beer brewery was set up in the cellar, from which the Nyborg brewery Carlsminde later emerged.
Around 1900 the building was badly dilapidated. The Nyborg museum association campaigned for its rescue, and the architect Mogens Clemmesen of the Nationalmuseet restored the property, in parallel with his work on Nyborg Slot. In 1919 a cultural history museum opened here, which passed to the Nationalmuseet in 1922 and also housed the city library until 1939.
Between 2016 and 2018 the property was comprehensively renovated and refurnished again. Today Østfyns Museer operates Nyborg's city history museum here, with exhibitions on trade, architecture and daily life in the Renaissance and the Middle Ages.
