Bruunshaab Gamle Papfabrik
Working factory museum near Viborg where cardboard is still made from waste paper on machines almost a hundred years old.
Over het museum
At the dammed mill pond in Bruunshåb, a few kilometers south of Viborg, the manufacturing family Bruun founded a cloth factory in 1821, whose machines were driven by the water power of the stream. The business grew strongly in the early days of industrialization and is considered a cradle of the central Jutland textile industry; the factory's current main building was erected in 1909.
In 1916 the joint-stock company A/S J. Smiths Papfabrik acquired the site, and from 1920 cardboard was produced there under director Janus Smith. Many machines came from other paper and cardboard factories, especially from København. After Janus Smith's death in 1926, his son Oscar Smith expanded production and also supplied customers abroad. In the 1940s and 1950s the plant employed the most workers and received its biggest modernization; the family kept the majority of shares until 1976. The factory rooms have since been preserved largely in their 1950s condition.
In 1986 the foundation Fonden Bruunshåb Gamle Papfabrik was established; on January 5, 1987, the working museum was inaugurated and production resumed. Since then, staff and volunteers have processed waste paper into gray and colored fiberboard via edge runner, beater, cardboard machine, press, drying tunnel, and calender – with transmission shafts, belt drives, and special machines just as decades ago. The cardboard is made into boxes, suitcases, and folders, which are sold in the museum shop. Older machines no longer in use, such as a steam engine, a lacquering machine, and an embossing machine, can also be seen; since 2017 a box manufacturer has also been making its products in a side wing.
