Det Sorte Geomuseum
Volunteer-run geology museum in Gedser with fossils, minerals and amber, as well as a hands-on fossil hunt.
Over het museum
The museum's beginnings lie in the Gedser library: in 1987, fossils and amber from a private collector were displayed there in a few display cases. In 1989 a local geological collection grew out of this, and in 1993 a proper museum with fossils and amber with insect inclusions from the surrounding area opened in the library.
After the Danish municipal reform of 2007, the library closed; since then volunteers have continued to run the museum. In the same year, one of the largest private collections of rocks and minerals in the Nordic region was added, and in 2010 the exhibition space was expanded with additional display cases. The operator is the friends' association Det sorte Geomuseums venner, whose income flows entirely into operations and expansion.
The collection ranges from early traces of life through sea urchins, cephalopods and shark teeth to colorful minerals from around the world. A highlight is a large polished star almandine, a red garnet. In the courtyard lies an 18-ton erratic boulder from Hasselø. Short films in the "Geo-Bio" explain, among other things, the geology of Gedser Odde, the southernmost point of Denmark.
