Over het museum

Dragør Museum tells the story of the seafaring town on the Øresund. It is housed in one of the oldest buildings at the old harbor; the museum dates the building to 1753, with parts of the structure thought to be older still. The house has served as the town's museum since 1933.

Around 2020 the building was thoroughly renovated: drainage, insulated floors and roofs and careful masonry repairs turned the damp old building into a climatically suitable exhibition venue without changing its historic appearance.

The exhibitions combine the historic rooms with contemporary interpretation. The first floor deals with the medieval herring markets that once made Dragør more important than København, and with maritime trade; at interactive screens, visitors can catch herring or steer a merchant ship. Furnished skipper's rooms with furnishings from old Dragør houses show how people used to live here.

On the second floor, themed rooms follow on the seafaring town, domestic life and Dragør in wartime. Paintings by local artists such as C. W. Eckersberg as well as Peter Carlsen's contemporary painting "Amager 2019" and a presentation on the master builder Johan Blichmann, who shaped the town in the 18th century, complement the collection. Today the museum belongs to Museum Amager.
