Over het museum

Fredensborg Museum is housed in the Rytterskole (cavalry school) of Avderød, one of the roughly 240 village schools that King Frederik IV had built in his cavalry districts in the 1720s. The schoolhouse in the Kronborg Rytterdistrikt was built in 1723, served as a school until 1942, and afterward as a teacher's residence. Since 1976 the well-preserved building, which belongs to the municipality, has been used as a local history museum.

The museum was set up by the local history association in Karlebo; at times the local history archive was also housed in the building. Since 2023 the volunteer Foreningen Fredensborg Museum has run the museum. It collects and presents history from the area of present-day Fredensborg Municipality – from Esrum Sø to the Øresund, from the Middle Ages to the present – and is also building an online collection on places and people of the region.

Three permanent exhibitions shape the visit: a schoolroom where you can recreate lessons from about 1900 to 1940, a collection of wall and decorative tiles from the factories in Humlebæk and Nivå (1936–1981), and the Vognporten (carriage gate) with old farm machinery, carriages, and firefighting equipment. There are also smaller changing exhibitions. The museum garden is open to visitors outside opening hours as well.

Aanbod voor scholenja
Goed om te wetenSchool classes (grades K–9) can book a 45-minute role-play "School as in 1900" with the teacher Fru Seerup, free for schools in Fredensborg Municipality; register by email at least two weeks in advance, not possible on Thursdays. Since the schoolroom holds only about 12 children, classes should allow around two hours.
