GAIA Museum Outsider Art
Outsider art museum in Randers with around 500 works from around the world, a café, a shop, and workshops where people with disabilities work.
Over het museum
GAIA Museum Outsider Art was founded in June 2002 in Randers as an independent foundation. It is dedicated to outsider art, also called art brut: art by people without academic training that arises from their own direct creative urge.
The museum is both a cultural institution and a workplace. Under an agreement with Randers Municipality, it provides employment for people with special needs, for example with Down syndrome, autism, or learning disabilities. Around 50 of them work together with artistically and educationally trained staff in the café, in the museum shop, in the framing workshop, and in creative workshops. Attached is the GAIA Akademi, an art school with a studio and a three-year program for young people.
The collection comprises about 500 works by Danish and international outsider artists, including Aleksander Lobanov, Raymond Thunder-Sky, and Hans Hartmann; it grows mainly through donations and purchases from the temporary exhibitions. A selection can be seen in the permanent exhibition. In 2008 the café GAIA Papaya was added, designed by outsider artists. GAIA is a co-founder and the secretariat of the European Outsider Art Association.
