Over het museum

J. C. Jacobsen began brewing beer in 1847 on Valby Bakke in Copenhagen; his son Carl later founded the Ny Carlsberg brewery. On the site of Jacobsen's first brewery, the brewery yard of Gamle Carlsberg, Carlsberg has welcomed visitors since 1982. Most of the beer production was moved to Fredericia in 2008, but the house brewery Husbryggeriet Jacobsen still brews on site today.

The former visitor center Visit Carlsberg was closed from 2018 and was extensively modernized. On December 1, 2023, it reopened as Home of Carlsberg with an exhibition expanded from 1,000 to 3,000 square meters. In 2024, areas on the brewery workers, the artist Thorvald Bindesbøll as designer of the Carlsberg logo, and the brand's ties to football were added.

With original pieces from the old brewery, digital stations, and games, the exhibition leads through the founding, the brewing craft, the research of the Carlsberg Laboratory, and the cultural heritage of the Jacobsen family. Also on view is a very large collection of unopened beer bottles. The site includes the old storage cellars, a sculpture garden, and the stable with brewery horses and vintage delivery vans – horses have been part of the brewery since its founding. The tour ends in the Carlsberg Bar, where a drink is included in admission.

Online prices vary by time slot (adults DKK 235–245, teenagers from DKK 155); advance booking recommended, tickets are non-refundable. The exhibition ticket includes one drink (40 cl draft beer, soft drink, or water); those under 18 receive a non-alcoholic drink. Copenhagen Card accepted; no annual pass. Brewery yard, bar, stable, and Brand Store are accessible without an exhibition ticket.

To visit the exhibition in a wheelchair, a guided tour must be booked 14 days in advance (info@homeofcarlsberg.com). Because of many stairs and listed buildings, the cellars and parts of the exhibition are not accessible; the grounds are mostly paved with cobblestones. Wheelchairs up to 67 cm wide; loan wheelchairs available. One elevator in the exhibition, a lift at the terrace to the restaurant. Assistance dogs allowed, pets not.

Children and teenagers are welcome when accompanied by adults; the exhibition works with interactive games, and brewery horses and ponies live in the stable. Strollers cannot be taken into the exhibition because of the many stairs and are left in the yard.
