Horsens Kunstmuseum
Museum of Danish contemporary art in the park Caroline Amalie Lund, with the largest collection of works by Michael Kvium.
Over het museum
The roots of the art museum go back to 1906: the Museum Association of Horsens, founded then, stipulated that the new Horsens Museum should have a department for more recent Danish painting and sculpture. Over decades a collection emerged with works of the Golden Age such as P. C. Skovgaard and J. Th. Lundbye as well as L. A. Ring, J. F. Willumsen, and Egill Jacobsen.
In 1984 the art department moved from the museum building on Sundvej into the pavilion Lunden, whose foundation stone the Citizens' Shooting Guild had laid in 1843, and became an independent, state-recognized art museum. Claus Hagedorn-Olsen has long been its director. Extensions in 1992 (foyer, café, library, exhibition rooms), 2006 (large exhibition hall), and 2017 (Kvium hall and storage) turned the old pavilion into a modern white-cube museum.
With independence, the collection strategy changed: instead of individual works by many artists, the museum acquires extensive groups of works by a few positions, beginning with the young generation of painters of the 1980s. The focal points include Michael Kvium, Erik A. Frandsen, Nina Sten-Knudsen, Lars Nørgård, and Christian Lemmerz, later also Cathrine Raben Davidsen, Anne Marie Ploug, and Emil Westman Hertz. Art is also shown in the surrounding park. Today the house belongs to Museum Horsens, which also includes the cultural-history Horsens Museum on Sundvej.
