Over het museum

A mill probably already stood in the Middle Ages on the site of the present mill in Neder Dråby: in 1518 Christian II was granted a mill in Dråby parish. In later centuries the complex is described several times as dilapidated, and in 1826 a new building was necessary. In the 1830s King Frederik VI had his Dutch windmill "Holtens Mølle" from Odsherred, which could not hold its own there against the competition, moved to Jægerspris. A bakery was also part of the milling operation.

In January 1854 the mill burned down – in the same year in which Frederik VII took over Jægerspris Slot and with it the mill. In 1854/55 the king had a new, large Dutch mill built with a sail span of 24 meters, which is among the largest in the country. A hand-forged weather vane with his monogram still crowns the cap. After the sail shaft broke in 1924, a diesel engine drove the millstones; milling continued until 1954, and the associated bakery operated until 1964.

From 1966, citizens campaigned for its restoration, and from 1967 a town festival in Jægerspris raised money for it. In 1969 the mill was inaugurated with new sails as a working museum mill that could once again grind grain into flour using wind power. After a lightning strike in July 2001 that destroyed one sail, it was inaugurated again in June 2003, now once more with sails of the original length of 24 meters.
