Over het museum

The watermill in the village of Kaleko, a few kilometers east of Faaborg, is considered the oldest surviving grain mill in Denmark. Grinding probably took place on the property as early as the 15th century; the mill appears by name in a deed of 1643, when it was sold and came to the Holstenshus estate. The oldest building still standing dates from around 1600.

Until 1912, miller families worked here and supplied farmers and townspeople in the area with flour. As early as 1917 the complex was made accessible as a museum, and in 1944 it came under protection as a historic monument. Preserved are two overshot water wheels, the watercourse and the grinding mechanism; the mill pond was restored in the 1960s. In 2025 the mill received a new paddle wheel with the support of several foundations. The place became known nationwide as a filming location for Christmas calendars of Danish television, including "Nissebanden" (1984).

Today Kaleko Mølle belongs to the Øhavsmuseet. The thatched buildings with the miller's dwelling, workshops and a small café open during the summer holidays and on individual activity days; the grounds with mill pond, water play track and listening stations are freely accessible year-round. From here the child-friendly hiking trails "Vandets Veje" lead to the sound and to the archipelago sea.
