Over het museum

Skovsgård near Esholte was originally a manor with a medieval main building, water mill, and farmyard; in 1670 the Crown bought the estate. At the beginning of the 19th century, the old main building was demolished and a Dutch gallery windmill was built on the castle mound, which has been a listed building since 1964.

With a royal permit to bake wheat bread, a bakehouse with a stone oven was built to the east of it in 1851, in which baking was done for over a century. After the bakery closed, the museum association restored the building and set up the Bagerimuseum in it.

Today the collection comprises more than 500 objects from all over Denmark – hand tools, machines, bread wagons, and sleds, as well as mementos from bakeries, confectioneries, and mills from about 1900 to 2000. Alongside the original bakery, a reconstruction of the bakery of Vemmetofte Abbey from 1880 can be seen. On many opening days, volunteer bakers bake in front of an audience, and there are also baking courses and holiday activities for children. The mill is to be comprehensively restored in the coming years.
