Straagaards Smedje
Volunteer-run local history museum with a local archive in an old smithy in Kliplev – history of the market and railway town on the Hærvej.
Over het museum
The local history association for Kliplev parish was founded in 1980 and initially kept its collection in basement rooms of the Kliplev school. In 1990 committed citizens bought the old smithy Straagaards Smedje; with money from the fund of the long-established market Kliple Mærken, further sponsors and a great deal of volunteer work, it was converted into a local history museum, which also provided space for the local archive.
In 2003 the museum received a larger collection of agricultural and craft tools. To house it, the independent institution Straagaards Smedje built an octagonal pavilion behind the smith's residence, again with the support of the market fund and in countless hours of volunteer work.
The collection was assembled over decades by residents of Kliplev and the surrounding area. It tells the story of a place that was a pilgrimage site and market town on the Hærvej, lived from cattle and horse trading and peat cutting, belonged to the county of the Ahlefeldt family, and was the scene of defensive fighting during the German invasion in World War II. Museum and archive are run by the Lokalhistorisk Forening for Kliplev Sogn; besides the permanent exhibition, the house shows changing smaller exhibitions.
