Over het museum

The foundation was laid by master painter Erik Nielsen from Karleby on Falster: in 1976 he donated his collection of old motorcycles to the then municipality of Stubbekøbing, which in return provided suitable premises. In 1977 the Stubbekøbing Motorcykelmuseum opened. A few years later a large collection of historic radios, loudspeakers, gramophones and televisions from the collector Benny Ahlburg was added.

Since then the holdings have grown from around 80 to about 250 motorcycles, a large part of which is permanently on display. The show is complemented by a series of individual engines that illustrate technical development in the 20th century, as well as loans of special machines. A friends' association restores the vehicles and has set up workshops and storage in Stubbekøbing.

For the 2026 season the museum moved under the name Danmarks Motorcykelmuseum into the former library at the harbor (Dosseringen 3). The new premises offer around 300 square meters more space and a completely rebuilt exhibition that tells the history of the motorcycle along a common thread over 125 years – with chapters on the rivalry between British and Japanese manufacturers, the rivalry between Harley-Davidson and Indian, Danish makes such as Nimbus, and the inline four-cylinder engine.
