Over het museum

Bunker 75665 near Tarp, north of Esbjerg, was cast in June 1943 and handed over to the Wehrmacht by the Organisation Todt in August of the same year. It is a crew bunker of the type Regelbau 622 for 20 soldiers, the most frequently built type in Denmark; here the outer walls were made three meters thick, even stronger than usual. It belonged to the stronghold of the Esbjerg airbase, which the Luftwaffe used during the occupation, and served as accommodation, shelter, storage, and command post. Wall paintings in one of the two rooms were probably made by soldiers of the guard unit.

When two private individuals began the restoration, there was almost half a meter of water inside, and no furnishings were left. Over several years, and with support from local foundations, the Foreningen Esbjerg i Atlantvolden, and many volunteers, armored doors, bunks, a stove, telephones, and the air filtration system were acquired and installed, so that the bunker is now furnished again as it was when the Luftwaffe withdrew in 1945. The non-commercial museum receives no public funding.

In 2018 a scaled-down replica of the airfield's former main guardhouse was built at the entrance to the bunker, which now serves as an entrance area with found objects. Next to it is the Folkerummet with the ticket desk and a small café. Every year around Liberation Day in early May, the museum opens its season with guests from other museums and associations. It also offers tours lasting several hours to other bunkers on the former airfield grounds that are otherwise not accessible.
