Over het museum

Albert Schweitzer had the house built in the early 1920s in the spa town of Königsfeld because his wife Helene, after illness and internment during World War I, needed a healthy climate and could no longer accompany him to Lambaréné on a permanent basis. The family moved in with their daughter Rhena on May 1, 1923. The design came from the Stuttgart architect Wilhelm Weigel: a shingle-clad half-timbered building with a mansard roof, whose interior fittings have largely survived.

For years Königsfeld was the center of life for Helene and Rhena, while Albert Schweitzer used the house between his stays in Africa, concert tours and lectures as a place to write and recuperate. Because of Helene's Jewish background, mother and daughter left Königsfeld in 1933; after the war Helene returned and lived here until 1957. In 1959 Schweitzer gave the house to the Moravian Church (Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine).

In the summer of 2001 the building opened as a memorial and meeting place, the “Forum für Information und Kommunikation”. Seven rooms with photos, documents and media stations guide visitors through Schweitzer's ethical and intellectual work, the history of the hospital in Lambaréné, the life of Helene Schweitzer and the building history of the house. The Historischer Verein Königsfeld (local history society) runs the house with volunteer attendants and guides; the Albert-Schweitzer-Studienkreis organizes the annual Albert-Schweitzer-Tage.
