Over het museum

In the middle of Forchheim's old town stands the so-called Kaiserpfalz (imperial palace), actually a residence of the Prince-Bishops of Bamberg, which Bishop Lambert von Brunn had built in the late 14th century. The building, with its late Gothic wall paintings, is regarded as a monument of national importance; an early medieval royal palace is documented for Forchheim, but its remains have not yet been found.

The east wing houses the Pfalzmuseum of the town of Forchheim, which combines three specialized museums: the archaeology, city and costume museums. In 2008 the Archaeology Museum of Upper Franconia opened on the first two upper floors as a branch museum of the Archäologische Staatssammlung München.

On two floors, more than 600 selected objects – jewelry, weapons, cult objects, tools and everyday finds – show the prehistory and early history of the region from the Stone Age to the threshold of the modern era. Special attention is given to important settlement sites such as the Ehrenbürg and the Staffelberg; separate sections deal with the royal palace and the economic development of Upper Franconia from leatherworking through glassmaking to porcelain.

Models, interactive zones and animations complement the finds. With guided tours, a family rally, children's birthday parties and event days, the museum also sees itself as a starting point for archaeological excursions in the region.

Family rally with the mascots Pfalzi and Löbe (leaflet with hands-on stations, from age 6, €16 incl. admission) at the ticket desk. Children's birthday parties on topics such as the Stone Age, Celts or Romans (1.5–2 hours, €120–180, max. 15 children), workshops and holiday programs. Playground in the Pfalzgraben with a game chest of historical games (key against a deposit at the ticket desk).
