Archäologisches Freilichtmuseum Oerlinghausen
Open-air museum on the Barkhauser Berg with reconstructed houses from the Old Stone Age to the early Middle Ages and many hands-on activities.
Over het museum
The museum opened in 1936 as the "Germanengehöft" (Germanic farmstead) and is regarded as the first open-air museum of its kind. The occasion was excavations carried out by the museum's founder Hermann Diekmann on the Barkhauser Berg between 1926 and 1931. The site was closely tied to Nazi ideology: Reich Education Minister Bernhard Rust opened it, it was supported by the Reichsbund für Deutsche Vorgeschichte, and plays, celebrations and training sessions were aimed especially at young people. After the end of the war the grounds became overgrown and were dismantled in January 1946.
From 1960 a new Germanic farmstead was built, which opened in 1961 and attracted almost 60,000 visitors in its first year. It was based on excavations from 1937 and showed an Iron Age farm with five buildings. Without full-time staff, however, the site stalled, and in 1973 it burned down completely.
With the involvement of the Landesverband Lippe and the town of Oerlinghausen, a fresh start began in 1979 under the name Archäologisches Freilichtmuseum (Archaeological Open-Air Museum). Under Helmut Luley, the large circuit based on modern settlement archaeology was created. Today a sponsoring association runs the roughly 1.5-hectare grounds with six building groups, from the Ice Age reindeer hunter's tent to the early medieval farmstead; the outdated Germanic houses of 1961 now also serve for critical engagement with the museum's own history and are being gradually replaced.
