Bachritterburg Kanzach
Reconstructed early 14th-century wooden castle of the lesser nobility that brings the Middle Ages to life during living history days and guided tours.
Over het museum
Until 1392 the castle of the Bachritter stood on the Schlösslesberg near Kanzach; they were a branch of the Lords of Pflummern, who held local lordship in the 13th and 14th centuries. In 1392 the castle was burned down and never rebuilt. The idea of recreating such a castle of the lesser nobility was developed in 1998 by the archaeologist Karl Banghard, and the municipality of Kanzach took it up under Mayor Rudolf Obert.
Because there are no excavation findings from the original Kanzach castle, the excavated wooden residential tower of Eschelbronn in the Kraichgau served as the model; the medieval archaeologist Tilman Mittelstraß provided the scholarly direction for the reconstruction. The residential tower on its mound was built in 2000/2001 slightly east of the old motte, followed in 2003/2004, under the scholarly direction of Stefan Uhl, by the outer bailey with a combined house and stable, a granary, a horse stable and a castle garden. The complete complex was inaugurated on April 1, 2004. Construction was financed mostly by the EU's LEADER program, with contributions from the state and the municipality.
The rooms are furnished as if the lord of the castle, his family and servants might return at any moment; the furnishings are based on research by a Viennese institute for the study of material culture. Since its completion, living history groups have regularly brought the castle to life, demonstrating crafts, cooking and everyday life in the late Middle Ages. The Bachritterburg is part of the ArchäoPark Federsee network, and bookings are handled by the Federseemuseum.
