Over het museum

In Meggen and Halberbracht, pyrite was mined from 1852, later also barite, zinc and lead ore. The mine long counted among the important pyrite and barite mines in the world; from Meggen raw materials, the sister company Sachtleben in Duisburg-Homberg produced the white pigment lithopone from 1890. In the world wars the mine was considered vital to the war effort; in 1943/44 over 4,000 people worked there, including forced laborers and prisoners of war. From 1963 the mine was converted to a metal ore mine, until the last shift was worked on March 31, 1992 because of declining zinc content.

Former miners campaigned for the preservation of the surface facilities after the closure; in 1998 the Förderverein Bergbaudenkmäler Lennestadt was founded for this purpose. After conversion work from 1999, the museum opened in 2002 in the completely preserved Sicilia shaft complex.

On display are the headframe with shaft hall and hoisting vessel, two hoisting engines including operators' stands – one of which can be set in motion –, compressors, the mine control room and mine vehicles. In the information center in the former tag-check building, exhibits, texts and a film explain the formation of the deposit, the mining methods up to trackless technology, ore processing and the further processing of the products. In an adit, work underground is shown. Tours are led by former miners; two mining hiking trails in Meggen and Halberbracht complement the museum.
