Over het museum

Beneath the Schlema Valley runs the Markus-Semmler-Stolln, a drainage adit begun around 1500 that extends more than 40 kilometers to Schneeberg and Neustädtel. It originally served to carry mine water away from silver and copper mining. In the early 20th century, radium-bearing springs were discovered here, laying the foundation for the spa town of Schlema; after 1945, Wismut used the old mine workings for uranium mining.

Access to today's show mine is via Shaft 15IIb, which was sunk in 1980. After the first Wismut show mine at Shaft 371 in Hartenstein had to close because the deposit was being flooded, former miners prepared this shaft for visitors. The show mine opened in July 1999.

The cage takes you about 50 meters down to the Markus-Semmler level. During the roughly two-hour mine tour, mining guides show tunnel sections from several centuries, the former foreman's office, and drilling and mining technology from the Wismut era. The health and environmental consequences of uranium mining and the subsequent remediation are also addressed.
