Over het museum

On the Werder island, mills have been permitted to be built since the year 1500; at times three post windmills stood here. The last of them was still grinding until 1949 and helped the population in the hungry years after the Second World War. It burned down in December 1973, and the Mühlenberg lost its landmark.

In 1985 the city administration and committed citizens found an identical post windmill in Klossa near Jessen, bought it for 6,000 East German marks, and brought the dismantled parts to Werder. From 1987, volunteer mill enthusiasts and specialists from various trades rebuilt it at the old site. The mill was inaugurated in 1991, and at the first mill festival in 1993 its sails turned again for the first time. Since 2005 it has had replicas of the Hecht spring-shutter sails, and since 2007 it has again been able to run in the wind and grind.

The entire mill body can be turned into the wind around the central post. Inside, a grinding gear, a winnowing machine, and the wooden drive mechanism can be seen. In 2025 the city had the mill repaired again so that it can be turned once more. The millstones of the burned-down predecessor lie clearly visible on the slope of the Mühlenberg, where the mill festival is held every August.
