Büchnerhaus
Georg Büchner's birthplace in Riedstadt-Goddelau with the permanent exhibition "Von Goddelau zur Weltbühne" on his life and work – free admission.
Over het museum
Georg Büchner was born in this half-timbered house in Goddelau on October 17, 1813. At the time his father worked as a physician at the nearby Hofheim hospital, an early psychiatric institution; the young family rented the house and moved to Darmstadt in 1816.
Built in 1665, the building was long neglected and has been a listed monument since 1977. A friends' association saved it together with the town of Riedstadt, which owns the house today; after restoration was completed in 1997, the exhibition opened in 1998.
The permanent exhibition "Von Goddelau zur Weltbühne" (From Goddelau to the World Stage) tells the story of Büchner's short life in symbolic room installations: from the family table through the "Hessischer Landbote" (The Hessian Courier) and his flight into exile in Strasbourg to his work on a dissertation about the nervous system of the barbel fish and his early death in Zurich in 1837. The last room is devoted to the impact of his plays on stages around the world, including a video collage in which winners of the Georg Büchner Prize have their say. The upper floor houses a library, reading room and archive.
In 2021 the former friends' association and the BüchnerBühne Riedstadt theater merged to form the association BüchnerFindetStatt, which runs the museum and the theater together. Readings, lectures, concerts and special exhibitions take place in the gallery in the former stable and in the courtyard.
