Bürsten- und Heimatmuseum Schönheide
Museum in the Alte Pfarre (Old Rectory) of 1651 on brush making in the Ore Mountains and the local history of Schönheide.
Over het museum
The museum is located in the so-called Alte Pfarre in the center of Schönheide next to the church. The half-timbered building was erected in 1651 as a school and expanded about 25 years later into a rectory; it is among the oldest buildings in the village. Granite walls, groin vaults, timberwork, and much of the old room layout have been preserved.
In December 2000, the local history association opened the Bürsten- und Heimatmuseum here. The focus is on brush making, which emerged from small beginnings in Schönheide around 1825 and developed in the 19th century into the most important trade of the villages around the Kuhberg. At times, over 2,000 people in the region worked in factories for brushes, brooms, and paintbrushes that were exported worldwide.
The first floor shows machines, tools, and raw materials of the brush and paintbrush makers as well as a collection of historical products. The second floor deals with local history: the Schönheiderhammer ironworks, in existence since 1566, the craftsmen's guild, a workers' living kitchen around 1920, and testimonies of Ore Mountain folk art. Every year the association also sets up an elaborate Christmas exhibition.
