Burg Jagsthausen
Castle of the Lords of Berlichingen in the Jagst valley with a castle museum: Götz's iron hand and Roman finds – currently by appointment only.
Over het museum
The Götzenburg in Jagsthausen has been associated with the von Berlichingen family since the Middle Ages; the family built the present complex in the 15th and 16th centuries from a two-winged core building. The town is considered the birthplace of the imperial knight Götz von Berlichingen, who was born here around 1480 and became famous as the "knight with the iron hand" through Goethe's drama. Between 1876 and 1878 the family had the castle extensively remodeled to designs by August von Beyer, master builder of Ulm Minster; the south wing and gate tower were added at that time, and a park was laid out around the complex.
Today the castle houses the Schlosshotel Götzenburg, and since 1950 the Burgfestspiele Jagsthausen (castle festival) have been held in the castle courtyard. Part of the complex is home to the castle museum. Its roots go back to the 18th century, when family mementos accumulated in the Berlichingen archive. A Baroness von Berlichingen bought back Götz's iron hand, which had passed into other hands in the meantime; the entire collection was declared inalienable family property.
Because the castle stands within the area of the Roman Limes fort of Jagsthausen, numerous Roman finds made their way into the museum up until the 20th century. Alongside the iron hand and other mementos of Götz, it therefore also displays objects from the fort and its associated civilian settlement. The museum is currently accessible only by prior appointment.
