Burg Wolfsegg
Well-preserved late medieval noble castle in Wolfsegg near Regensburg with a castle museum on life in the castle and on the cave in the castle rock.
Over het museum
Burg Wolfsegg sits enthroned in the middle of the village on a limestone rock about 15 kilometers northwest of Regensburg. A beam built into the masonry was felled in 1277/78; the builders are considered to be the Wolf von Schönleiten family, who from the mid-14th century called themselves after Wolfsegg. In 1367 the lords of Laaber bought the castle, which appears by name for the first time in the purchase contract. Under them it experienced its heyday in the 15th century; the knights' hall (Rittersaal) decorated with tendril painting was created at that time on the third floor.
After the Laaber line died out in 1475, the owners changed frequently, including the lords of Eck and the Regensburg Thumer family, who in the 16th century had the brick stair tower added. Afterward the castle served mainly as an administrative seat and was never destroyed. In 1886, the barons of Oberndorff donated the dilapidated building to the municipality, which first set up a school and teacher's apartment there, and later housing for poor families.
In 1933 Georg Rauchenberger of Regensburg acquired the residential building and castle courtyard and saved them from decay. In 1970 he founded the Kuratorium Burg Wolfsegg (board of trustees), to which he bequeathed the castle. After a comprehensive restoration from 1986 to 1989, the castle museum opened in 1989; its exhibition was completely redesigned from 2017 to 2019.
At the authentic location, the museum shows how hard life was for a castle steward, his family, and the servants. A separate section is devoted to the widely branching cave in the castle rock, which itself is not open to the public. In summer, events of the Wolfsegger Burgsommer (Wolfsegg Castle Summer) take place in the castle courtyard.
