Darß-Museum
Regional museum in Prerow on the nature, seafaring, fishing, and architecture of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula – currently closed for renovation.
Over het museum
The museum goes back to two local history exhibitions in the Darßer Kunsthütte in the summers of 1951 and 1952 and was founded in 1953 as the Darßer Heimatmuseum (Darß local history museum). Its foundation consisted of keepsakes from Prerow families, including estates of captains' families of the 18th and 19th centuries. The collection was first housed in the so-called Deichhaus.
When the rooms became too small, the municipality acquired a brick house on Waldstraße built in 1939 and now a listed building, a former guesthouse. After renovation, the museum was reopened there in 1980 as the Darß-Museum. In the garden, beneath mighty old oaks, stand traditional boats of coastal and bodden fishing.
The museum sees itself as a regional museum: it connects geology and coastal dynamics, the plant and animal life of the bodden landscape with everyday history, fishing, shipping, the seaside resort tradition, and Darß architecture. A special feature is the display of fresh native wild plants, maintained since the founding. Since 1995 the museum has been run by the Kur- und Tourismusbetrieb of the Baltic seaside resort of Prerow, and a friends' association has supported it since 1992. The exhibition has been closed for several years; the building and permanent exhibition are to be renovated and redesigned.
