DB Museum Halle (Saale)
Branch of the DB Museum in engine shed IV of the former Halle P locomotive depot, with East German Reichsbahn locomotives – open Saturdays, April to December.
Over het museum
Since 2003 the DB Museum Halle (Saale) has been a branch of the DB Museum in Nuremberg and is run by the Deutsche Bahn Stiftung (Deutsche Bahn Foundation). It occupies engine shed IV of the former Halle P locomotive depot. The depot's first facilities were built as early as the 1860s; the roundhouse itself dates from 1895 and was given additional, longer bays in 1908 for the large express locomotives that were new at the time. The turntable was installed in 1929.
Halle was once home to express locomotives of classes 01, 03 and 39 as well as streamlined class 01.10 locomotives, and later mainly diesel locomotives. From 1951 the Deutsche Reichsbahn's testing and development center for mechanical engineering (VES-M) used the site to test new locomotive technology.
The exhibition focuses on Deutsche Reichsbahn vehicles, especially from the East German (GDR) era: around 15 original locomotives, including express locomotive 03 1010, the Prussian T 8 (89 1004), electric locomotive E 18 047 and the large Soviet-built diesel locomotive 130 101. These are complemented by service vehicles, an exhibition on regional railroad history and the VES-M, and a large garden railway layout. Volunteers look after the vehicles.
As part of cost-cutting measures, the site was to serve only as a storage depot from 2026 and closed at the end of 2025. After talks with the City of Halle, the foundation decided to reopen the museum; since April 18, 2026, it has again been open on Saturdays, supported by the newly founded association Eisenbahnmuseum Halle. The site also includes the freely accessible museum track 24 at Leipzig Hauptbahnhof (main station).
