Deutsches Hutmuseum Lindenberg
Museum on the hat town of Lindenberg in a former hat factory: hat making, local history, and 300 years of hat fashion on two levels.
Over het museum
Hat making has shaped Lindenberg in the Western Allgäu since the 16th century. According to tradition, a horse dealer who had to spend the winter in Italy brought straw plaiting back from there. From the mid-18th century, production and trade were organized, and around 1830 the first factories appeared. Around 1890, more than 30 businesses produced millions of straw hats a year, and in the early 20th century Lindenberg was considered the center of the German men's straw hat industry.
After a crisis in the 1920s, the firms turned to felt and other materials, but the increasingly hatless fashion of the 1960s and 1970s brought most businesses to a standstill. In 1997 the town bought the grounds of the former Ottmar Reich hat factory, whose four-story factory building with chimney and boiler house, built in 1923 by Philipp Jakob Manz, has been preserved as an industrial monument.
After its conversion into a cultural factory, the Deutsches Hutmuseum opened there in December 2014; it received the Bavarian Museum Prize as early as 2015 and was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award in 2016. The foundation is a collection on hat culture built up over decades. On just under 1,000 square meters, the permanent exhibition leads through hat making, town history, and hat fashion; the building also houses the tourist information office, the museum restaurant Kesselhaus, and the event hall Kulturboden.
