Deutsches Industrielack-Museum
Private museum at Dortmund's harbor on the history, manufacture and use of industrial coatings – visits by prior reservation only.
Over het museum
The Deutsches Industrielack-Museum (German Industrial Coatings Museum) was founded in 2008 on the premises of the Dortmund paint manufacturer KADDI-LACK in the harbor area. The initiative came from company owner Thomas Grüner, who had collected objects and documents from his industry over many years, and exhibition specialist Volker Bach. When the company took over additional rooms in 2008, part of them was set aside for the museum.
Bach built the exhibition room by room as a volunteer; as soon as the first room was finished, the museum took part in Dortmund's Museum Night. A nonprofit friends' association was founded in 2009. Since then, paint and raw material manufacturers as well as industry associations have also supported the museum with exhibits and specialist literature and use it for conferences and customer visits.
The collection comprises more than 6,000 objects. The exhibition rooms on the upper floor cover laboratory equipment, machines used in paint production such as mills and dissolvers, old paint cans, color charts, raw materials, advertising materials and business papers of paint companies dating back to the 19th century; heavy exhibits are displayed on the outdoor grounds. A specialist library with a journal archive complements the exhibition. Because the museum is run entirely by volunteers, there are no fixed opening hours – visits are possible by reservation.
