Deutsches Stuhlbaumuseum Rabenau / Sachsen
Museum on Rabenau's chair-making tradition of more than 400 years, with a historic workshop, chairs from many eras, and local history.
Over het museum
As early as 1886, a call was made in Rabenau to collect antiquities and products of the local trade; the museum was founded in 1922. From 1931 the local history collection was on display in several attic rooms of the Rabenau school.
In 1978 the museum moved into the former stable building of the outer castle of Burg Rabenau on Lindenstraße and reopened as the Heimat- und Stuhlbaumuseum (local history and chair-making museum). A chair dealer had added a floor to the building with its groin vault in 1866 and used it as a chair manufactory; later it served as a residence. Since 1992 the museum has been expanded step by step with the support of the city and the Free State, and it was renovated and redesigned in 1993/94.
The collection shows chairs from the Baroque, Biedermeier, Gründerzeit, and Art Nouveau periods made in Rabenau, as well as tools, weaving patterns, and carvings. In 2005 the faithfully rebuilt workshop of chair maker Kurt Aehlig was added, whose machines still run on line shafts. The exhibition is complemented by the local history collection on the town's history, a wood library, and changing cabinet exhibitions. The museum is run by a non-profit association.
