Deutsches Textilmuseum
Museum in Krefeld-Linn with one of the most important textile collections in the world, shown in changing exhibitions on fashion, fabrics, and textile art.
Over het museum
The museum's roots go back to the late 19th century: around 1880, in Krefeld, whose economy had been shaped by the silk industry since the 17th century, people began to gather fabrics and textiles as a teaching collection for aspiring designers, weavers, and dyers. The collection served for a long time as study material for training at the weaving school and grew over decades to include clothing, textiles, and accessories.
At the end of the 1970s the holdings received the status of a museum collection and moved into a building specially prepared for it on Andreasmarkt in the old town of Linn; since then it has carried the name Deutsches Textilmuseum Krefeld. The museum is run by the city of Krefeld. The museum includes a restoration workshop and one of the largest textile specialist libraries in Germany, which can be used by appointment.
Today the collection comprises around 30,000 objects from all continents and eras up to the present. Because light, dust, and fluctuating climate harm delicate textiles, there is no permanent exhibition: the museum shows its holdings in themed exhibitions lasting several months, dimly lit and in climate-controlled display cases. Between two exhibitions the museum remains closed. Accompanying the exhibitions are guided tours, workshops for adults and children, and digital exhibitions on the website.
