Dom-Museum
Museum in Bremen's St. Petri Dom with grave finds of medieval archbishops, rare textiles, altar silver, and works of art – with free admission.
Over het museum
The impetus for the museum came from archaeological excavations carried out from 1973 to 1976 during the interior renovation of St. Petri Dom. Led by archaeologist Karl Heinz Brandt, the excavators came upon graves of Bremen archbishops and bishops from the 11th to 15th centuries whose grave goods were exceptionally well preserved.
Rescuing the textiles was particularly painstaking: vestments, miters, and fabric remnants from several graves were conserved over a period of years in a specialized workshop in Stockholm. In 1987 the finds could finally be shown in a museum of their own, set up in annexes on the southeast side of the church.
The tour begins in a former chapel whose walls bear paintings from the 15th century. On the first floor are sarcophagi and stone sculptures; the upper floor has a room with liturgical silver and the cathedral's former treasury, which now houses the bishops' vestments. An extension wing displays paintings and carved figures.
In addition to the grave finds – including a gilded crozier from Limoges, rings, chalices, and patens – the collection includes communion vessels from several centuries, books from the old cathedral library, and the "Schmerzensmann" (Man of Sorrows) by Lucas Cranach the Elder, which is also available as a tactile image.
