Museum of the Diocese of Fulda next to the cathedral: church treasures, relics of St. Boniface, medieval sculpture and Baroque vestments in the Domdechanei.
Photos, plans, documents, eyewitness interviews and objects brought by expellees show how numerous new churches were built after 1945 and what can become of them today.
Over het museum
The Dommuseum (cathedral museum) preserves artworks and testimonies from the history of Fulda's abbey church, which has held the tomb of St. Boniface since his death in 754 and is today the cathedral of the diocese. A first museum was established in 1914; after World War II it reopened in 1954 at the instigation of Adolf Bolte, later auxiliary bishop. After a comprehensive redesign by architects Michael Brawne and Franz Ollertz, the museum reopened in 1994.
The museum is on the south side of the cathedral in the Baroque Domdechanei (deanery) and the former seminary chapel; an entrance building added in the 1990s leads into a sequence of historic rooms in which medieval works are shown in late medieval rooms and Baroque pieces in Baroque rooms. The path to the entrance leads through the Domdechanei garden, which serves as a lapidarium.
The collection draws on three sources: the cathedral treasury with liturgical objects, vestments and parts of the Silver Altar; archaeological finds and architectural sculpture from the Carolingian Ratgar Basilica; and the collection of medieval sculpture from Fulda and Hesse assembled in the 19th century by cathedral canon Konrad Hahne. Many objects are still used in services today, so the museum also serves as a public sacristy and treasury. The permanent exhibition is complemented by special exhibitions on the art and church history of the diocese.
