Domschatz- und Diözesanmuseum Eichstätt

Sacred art from over 1,200 years of diocesan history in twelve rooms at Eichstätt Cathedral – with the cathedral treasury and late Gothic Walburga tapestries.

OpeningstijdenToegang vanaf € 4

Over het museum

The foundation was laid in 1901 by the art-loving priest Sebastian Mutzl, who donated his collection of Christian art to the Episcopal See of Eichstätt. The museum has had a checkered history: it was closed in 1943 and reopened in 1947.

From 1977 to 1982, the diocesan building office under Karljosef Schattner converted buildings southeast of the cathedral that were threatened with decay – the "Kipfenberger Stadel," an 18th-century granary, and the Baroque rooms above the mortuary – into exhibition spaces. The diocesan museum opened here in March 1982. Schattner's combination of the medieval cathedral complex, Baroque fabric, and modern design is still regarded as groundbreaking in architectural terms.

Since then the collection has grown through important acquisitions, including three late medieval tapestries on the legend of Saint Walburga and the Faber silver altarpiece. Since 2001, the museum has been called Domschatz- und Diözesanmuseum.

Twelve thematically arranged rooms show the organization of the diocese with its bishops, monasteries, and pilgrimages, finds from the cathedral excavations, veneration of saints, the Passion and Marian devotion, liturgical vestments, processional poles of the guilds, the treasury, and the former chapter house. Each year a special exhibition complements the program.
