Dorfmuseum Erzhausen
Volunteer-run village museum in the Alte Schillerschule: everyday life, crafts and school days in Erzhausen, with plenty to touch and try out.
Over het museum
The village museum is run by the Ortskundlicher Arbeitskreis Erzhausen, a group of dedicated local residents who have been researching, collecting and sharing the history of the village for decades. It was founded in the 1980s in the lower classroom of the Schillerschule and is now located on the upper floor of the building; the ground level houses the youth center.
The building itself is a piece of local history: the school was built in 1863, mostly of rough Langen sandstone, and extended in 1904. It served as an elementary school until new buildings on the school campus made it redundant.
The collection comprises around 5,000 objects, most of them from the past two centuries. Exhibits include a historic pharmacy, the shoemaker's workshop of Erich Lotz, glimpses into an old bakery and butcher's shop, agricultural and technical equipment, school items, toys, musical instruments, maps and building plans. An extensive picture archive with reproductions of old photographs and postcards dating back to 1900 rounds out the holdings.
Many exhibits may be touched and tried out; a tablet-based journey through time sends children on the trail of Ritter Erhart (Sir Erhart) and Fuchs Erzi (Erzi the Fox). With its project “Korb der Erinnerungen” (Basket of Memories), the team visits senior homes. In recognition of its educational work, the Hessian Ministry for Science and the Arts named it “Museum of the Month September 2025.” Since February 2026, the museum has opened regularly on the first Sunday of every month.
