Over het museum

The Pfannerhaus bears the name of a family of cheesemakers. Georg Pfanner came to Roßhaupten around 1860 as a cheesemaker's assistant, became a milk buyer, and in 1894 acquired the property "beim Roten Weber," to which he added a cheese cellar in 1895. His sons processed the local milk there into Emmental and Limburger cheese. In 1998 the municipality bought the house from the last owner of the family; today, besides the museum, it also houses municipal and commercial spaces.

Prompted by the Roßhaupten artist and local historian Pankraz Walk, a museum association was founded in 1998, and the village museum opened on October 10, 1999. The association runs it on a volunteer basis, organizes changing art exhibitions, and is a member of the Museenverbund Auerbergland.

The focus is on four personalities from the village: the lute maker Caspar Tieffenbrucker, the Baroque master builder and artist Johann Jakob Herkomer, the organ builder Andreas Jäger, and the sculptor Roman Anton Boos. Other rooms show rural living, old crafts, and the fate of the Sudeten Germans, who after 1945 built up an artificial flower production in the village that lasted until 1988. In addition there are the model collection "Kleine Welten" (Small Worlds), photos of the landscape that sank beneath the Forggensee, and the Via Claudia Augusta information center with a bloomery furnace and archaeological finds from the Stone Age to the Alemanni.
