Fachwerkmuseum im Ständerbau
Half-timbering museum in a 14th-century post-and-beam building: models and building components explain six centuries of half-timbered construction in Quedlinburg.
Over het museum
The museum is housed in one of the oldest half-timbered houses in Germany, a so-called Hochständerbau (high-post building) on Wordgasse dating from the first half of the 14th century. In this construction method the vertical posts run undivided from the sill to beneath the roof, and the ceiling beams are pushed through them and secured with wooden pegs. The house served as a residence from at least the 18th century and was inhabited until the 1960s.
Because of severe structural damage, the building was restored from 1965; in 1976 it opened as the Fachwerkmuseum. After an arson attack in the summer of 1997, the building had to be repaired again, and in 2025 a comprehensive renovation of the facade, timberwork and base followed.
The building itself is the most important exhibit. The exhibition by the Städtische Museen Quedlinburg leads through the development of half-timbered construction from the 14th to the 19th century, explains styles using models and shows salvaged decorative elements from demolished houses. Replicas of timber joints and carpenters' tools may be handled. The museum also provides information on restoration and reconstruction in the World Heritage town, which, with over 2,000 preserved half-timbered houses, is regarded as Germany's largest area monument.
