Over het museum

As early as 1738, prospecting above Feggendorf uncovered a hard coal seam, but it was not until October 31, 1831 that driving of the Feggendorfer Stolln began in what was then the Kingdom of Hanover. The coal supplied lime kilns, salt works, brickworks and smithies, and later households as well. In 1862 the adit was connected to a counter-adit near Hohenbostel on the other side of the Deister, which greatly improved ventilation.

Because markets were lost and more efficient mines and Westphalian coal brought competition, production ended in 1879. Mining resumed from 1917, an incline down to the valley was built in 1921, and at times well over a hundred miners worked here. In 1947 Preussag officially closed the mine, surface facilities were demolished and the adit entrance was backfilled.

From the 1980s, local history enthusiasts worked to preserve it; in 2003 the large-scale reopening by volunteer miners began, and since 2004 visitors have been taken underground. The friends' association founded in 2006 has been the owner and operator since 2012, and a new mine building was added in 2013. Since 2017 the mine has been recognized as a teaching mine: volunteers drive new galleries, restore old workings and mine coal on a small scale, so that visitors experience a small working operation.
