Over het museum

After the Second World War, the heath village of Bendestorf became one of the most important film locations in West Germany. The screenwriter Rolf Meyer received a production license in 1947 for his Junge Film-Union, built a first shooting hall behind the inn "Zum Schlangenbaum" from 1948 and a complete studio complex by 1950. Stars such as Hildegard Knef, Marika Rökk, Zarah Leander and Hans Albers stood in front of the camera here, and Peter Lorre shot his only film as a director. After the end of the Film-Union, changing producers and television broadcasters used the studios into the 2000s.

To commemorate this era, a film museum was created around 1990, initially housed in smaller rooms in the village. Since 2011 it has been supported by the association Freundeskreis Filmmuseum Bendestorf. In 2017 the museum moved to the historic studio grounds into a former studio building, where the Vox Klangstudio had most recently produced music recordings.

Under the name "Kulturraum Studio Bendestorf" it now combines exhibition, cinema, exhibition forum and media education. On display are cameras, projectors, costumes, props, posters and documents from Bendestorf productions as well as a permanent exhibition on the history of German television. The centerpiece is the largely original producers' cinema from the 1950s, where the daily rushes were once reviewed. Today it shows films both digitally and from 35 mm prints.
