Over het museum

The idea of an open-air museum for Lower Franconia arose in 1979; it was driven forward by the mayor of Fladungen, the district administrator of Rhön-Grabfeld and the district council president of Lower Franconia. In 1981 the Lower Franconia district decided to build it in Fladungen, and in 1983 the district, the Rhön-Grabfeld county and the town of Fladungen founded a special-purpose association as its operator. In the following years, land was acquired, the Reßmühle (Reß mill) was restored, and the first buildings from the region were dismantled and rebuilt on the site.

On September 30, 1990, the museum opened with eight accessible buildings. It has grown steadily since then: for its 25th anniversary in 2015 there were 20 buildings, and for its 30th anniversary, 24. In 2017 the cooperage from Sulzthal was added as the first fully inclusively designed museum building, and in 2022/23 the blacksmith's workshop from Waldberg, where courses and demonstrations have been held ever since.

Today, on about twelve hectares, there are roughly 30 farmsteads, workshops and municipal buildings from all over Lower Franconia and the Hessian and Thuringian parts of the Rhön. They show rural living and working from the 17th century to the 1970s, set amid gardens, orchards, fields and pastures with old domestic animal breeds. Since 1996, the Rhön-Zügle museum railway, with a steam or diesel locomotive, has run on selected Sundays and public holidays on the former local railway line between Fladungen and Mellrichstadt.
