Over het museum

The museum's roots go back to 1902, when the Verein für Volkskunst und Volkskunde (association for folk art and folklore) was founded in Feuchtwangen on the initiative of Dr. Hans Güthlein. It aimed to collect, preserve and publicly display the material culture of Franconia's rural population. Significant acquisitions were made in the very first years, such as the late Gothic Anna altar from Sachsbach and a Rococo fire engine from Herrieden; with purchased private collections, the foundation of the faience and folk art collection came into being.

In 1926 the collection moved into a late medieval half-timbered house in the old town. There, middle-class living rooms from the Baroque to the Art Nouveau period, farmhouse parlors and an original smoke kitchen show how people lived in town and country. As early as the 1920s, Bavarian heritage conservation praised the Feuchtwangen collection; because of its supraregional significance, the house later received the name Fränkisches Museum.

In 1965 a three-story annex was added, built on the site of the Feuchtwangen synagogue destroyed in 1938, which the museum commemorates today. Further expansions created a museum garden with a flax-breaking house, a hammer forge, a horse-driven gin and an equipment barn. After a general renovation, a new foyer and a new exhibition building, the museum reopened in 2008 in its present form with more than 2,000 square meters of space. The association remains the operator to this day. The museum also includes the craftsmen's rooms above the Romanesque cloister and the hands-on workshop Sommers Alte Druckerei (Sommer's Old Print Shop).
