Frankfurter Feldbahnmuseum
Association-run museum by the Rebstockpark with a large collection of narrow-gauge field railway locomotives and operating days with steam trains on its own line.
Over het museum
The museum's beginnings go back to the mid-1970s, when young railway enthusiasts bought a field railway (Feldbahn) steam locomotive that had been displayed as a monument in Königstein, with the aim of getting it running again. The collection of the “Frankfurter Schmalspurfreunde” (Frankfurt Narrow-Gauge Friends) was first housed in a roundhouse in Mainflingen and then moved several times, including to the former Nied repair works and an old streetcar depot in Bockenheim. At festivals in the region, the association repeatedly laid mobile track for its trains.
With the help of the City of Frankfurt, the association obtained a site at Römerhof next to the Rebstockpark in the mid-1980s. The first hall was built there in 1986, and the Feldbahnmuseum was formally opened on June 12, 1987. In the following years, the members built a 600 mm gauge line through the Rebstockpark, which gradually grew to well over a kilometer, as well as additional exhibition and storage halls.
The collection includes steam, diesel, benzene and electric locomotives from construction, agriculture, industry, mining and the military, including vehicles from India, Indonesia, Japan and the USA as well as cars of the Mecklenburg-Pommersche Schmalspurbahn; the Felten collection was added in 2016. The museum is run entirely by around 200 volunteer association members. In 1991 it hosted the first International Field Railway Meeting, which has since taken place annually at changing locations in Europe.
