Freilichtmuseum Finsterau
Open-air museum in the Bavarian Forest near the Czech border with more than 20 original farmhouses, a village smithy and a roadside inn.
Over het museum
The Finsterau Open-Air Museum opened in 1980 with the Kapplhof, a Waldler farmstead whose design dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Together with the older Massing Open-Air Museum in the Rottal, it is one of the Lower Bavarian open-air museums, run by a special-purpose association made up of the Lower Bavaria district, the districts of Rottal-Inn and Freyung-Grafenau, and the municipalities of Massing and Mauth. It was originally called "Freilichtmuseum Bayerischer Wald in Finsterau"; it received its current name in 1984.
On the spacious grounds on the edge of Finsterau stand farmhouses and village buildings from across the Bavarian Forest, which were dismantled at their original sites and re-erected here. The buildings date mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries, while their furnishings show life from the 1930s to the 1960s. The relocation of the Petzi farmstead from Pötzerreut between 1984 and 1988 is considered a methodological milestone: for the first time, a large natural-stone farmstead with all its buildings was moved as a whole.
In the following decades, additions included the Sachl, a village smithy, a wooden chapel, the roadside inn "Ehrn" from Kirchaitnach and the Salettl, a dance hall from Passau-Mariahilf rebuilt in 2012/13. At the end of 2007 the Schanzer-Häusl from Riedelsbach, a typical Bohemian Forest house, opened. Small permanent exhibitions on woodworking, farm carts, shoemaking and blacksmithing complement the farmsteads; demonstrations, festivals and an extensive hands-on program bring everyday life of the past to life.
