Kreativ – provokativ – plakativ

A selection of self-designed peace posters from 1980 to 2025 from the collection of graphic artist and activist Ekkehard Skoring, who regularly protests against war policy at the Brandenburg Gate.

Over het museum

Plans for a peace museum in Nuremberg date back to 1951, when an antimilitarist congress put forward the idea; at the time, however, it was not realized. The project gained new momentum in the early 1990s when, after most of the US troops had withdrawn, a garrison museum opened. In 1995, the nonprofit association Friedensmuseum Nürnberg e. V. was founded. After a long search, in early 1998 it moved into a former shop on Kaulbachstraße that association members had bought specifically for this purpose and made available to the association on favorable terms.

The museum sees peace as an active task and aims to encourage nonviolent conflict resolution. Its subject is the history of pacifism and antimilitarism in Germany over the past hundred-plus years, with a focus on the Nuremberg peace movement since 1945 and the often overlooked commitment of women. Portraits commemorate figures such as Bertha von Suttner, Carl von Ossietzky, the Scholl siblings and the Nuremberg pacifist Kunigunde Schumann.

Instead of a fixed permanent exhibition, the museum presents changing themed exhibitions accompanied by lectures, readings and discussion groups – from poster shows and child soldiers to artistic statements against war. A specialist library and an archive round out the offering. The museum is run entirely by volunteers, belongs to the International Network of Museums for Peace and the ICAN campaign, and is supported by the City of Nuremberg.
