New paintings by the artist featuring geometrically constructed landscape and architectural spaces, as well as a work on the windows of the glass cube.
The G2 Kunsthalle is located on the corner of Dittrichring and Gottschedstraße, opposite the Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church). From 1849 to 1898 this site was home to the Central-Halle, a venue for industrial and art exhibitions, balls, and concerts; it was followed by a military headquarters building that was destroyed in World War II. The gap long served as a parking lot until an East German computer center was built here between 1986 and 1989.
After various uses, entrepreneur and collector Steffen Hildebrand had the building thoroughly renovated and the fourth floor converted into bright exhibition spaces more than four meters high. The G2 Kunsthalle opened there in March 2015, run by a non-profit company for the promotion of art. It makes the private Hildebrand Collection permanently accessible to the public: the focus is on 21st-century painting, complemented by sculpture, drawing, and printmaking, featuring Leipzig artists such as Neo Rauch and Matthias Weischer as well as international artists.
In 2022 the G2 Schaulager (visible storage) was added on another floor, where an open storage wall system offers insight into how the works are kept; this brought the total space to more than 2,200 square meters. Together, the two venues present six to seven special exhibitions a year. Since 2017 the Kunsthalle, together with the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst (Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig), has awarded an annual prize for master students. Leo Wedepohl has been director since 2022.
