Galerie Stadt Sindelfingen
Municipal museum of contemporary art on Sindelfingen's market square with the Lütze Collection of southern German art – free admission.
Over het museum
Galerie Stadt Sindelfingen opened in 1990 as a museum of modern and contemporary art. It occupies the neoclassical former town hall of 1845 at the head of the market square, which the Berlin architect Josef Paul Kleihues converted into a museum in the 1980s and extended with an octagonal new building, the Oktogon; the latter has been a listed monument since 2016. Together, the old building and the Oktogon offer around 750 square meters of exhibition space, plus the skylight hall in the neighboring city library.
The core of the collection is the Lütze Collection, which the city acquired in 1986: more than 1,200 paintings, sculptures and prints that the Stuttgart collector Diethelm Lütze had assembled from 1972 onward. It represents southern German art from the late 19th century to the present – from the circle of Leibl and Stuck through Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) and Informel to the Karlsruhe Figuration – and has since been supplemented with current positions.
Today the gallery sees itself as a venue for exhibitions and production of contemporary art, where works created specifically for the house are often shown. The collection holdings are set in relation to current positions in changing presentations. A broad education program with tours, talks, lectures and painting courses for children complements the exhibitions. The entrance area also houses the i-Punkt, the city's tourist information office.
