Gedenkstätte Münchner Platz Dresden
Memorial in Dresden’s former court complex on political criminal justice, imprisonment, and executions under the Nazis, the Soviet occupation, and the early GDR.
Over het museum
The court complex on Münchner Platz went into operation in 1907 as the seat of the Saxon regional court, with an attached remand prison. During the Nazi era it became a center of political persecution: around 1,300 people were killed by guillotine in the execution courtyard, many of them members of the Czech resistance.
After the end of the war, Soviet military tribunals used the buildings at first, followed by the judiciary of the early GDR, which had a total of 83 death sentences carried out here until the end of 1956. The Technische Hochschule Dresden then took over the site and in 1959 opened a memorial in the former execution courtyard that commemorated almost exclusively the communist resistance.
Since 1994, the memorial has been part of the Stiftung Sächsische Gedenkstätten (Saxon Memorials Foundation). In 2012 the current permanent exhibition opened in the Georg-Schumann-Bau of TU Dresden; it compares Nazi justice, Soviet military justice, and GDR justice through individual life stories. Markings on the grounds and in the buildings also make the former court complex tangible; the monuments of the GDR-era memorial are now themselves part of the historic site.
In addition, the memorial researches other Dresden justice sites such as the prison on Mathildenstraße, destroyed in 1945, continually adds new biographies to its installation on those executed, and provides information about victims of persecution.
