Over het museum

The GröschlerHaus stands on the site of Jever's synagogue, consecrated in 1880, which residents of the town ransacked during the November pogrom of 1938 and which was subsequently demolished. A residential and commercial building was built on its foundations in 1954. When the ground-floor shop became vacant at the end of 2013, the district and the town rented the space; in July 2014 the volunteer working group began its work there. The house is named after Hermann and Julius Gröschler, the last leaders of the Jewish community, who were murdered in 1944.

After the first years with exhibition panels on the history of Jever's Jews, the house was rebuilt in 2017/2018 with EU funding and made accessible. In the process, traces of the synagogue came to light: a cellar with a former mikvah (ritual bath), now visible through floor windows, the wall of the school annex with an original window, and charred building parts from the fire debris. The synagogue's floor plan is traced on the floor.

The operator is the Zweckverband Schloss-Museum Jever; the house is looked after by the Arbeitskreis GröschlerHaus in the Jeverländischer Altertums- und Heimatverein. In addition to the permanent exhibition on Jever's Jewish community and a virtual reconstruction of the synagogue on display since the end of 2023, the center offers events, school modules, and an extensive online journal on regional history.
