Besucherbergwerk Philippstollen
Show mine on the Briloner Eisenberg in Olsberg: guided tours through an 18th-century ore tunnel to the Barbaragrotte.
Over het museum
Iron ore was mined for centuries on the Briloner Eisenberg above Olsberg; in the 18th century miners drove several tunnels into the mountain to open up the ore deposits inside. The Philippstollen was begun in 1749 and initially abandoned in 1754 without finding ore. Only around 1820 was the excavation resumed, reaching the mining area at the end of the 1830s; mining on the Eisenberg ended in 1916.
From 1992 the Arbeitskreis Bergbau (mining working group) of the Heimatbund der Stadt Olsberg restored the tunnel through volunteer work. In 2002 it was opened as a show mine; about 600 meters of the passage have been accessible for tours since then.
On the tours with helmet and smock, the route goes through the hand-cut passage to the Barbaragrotte and an underground lake. Visitors can see minerals such as pyrite and siderite, sinter formations, and traces of mining techniques. In winter the tunnel stays closed because it serves as a winter roost for bats. At the tunnel entrance stands the Steigerhaus (foreman's house) of the Heimatbund, which is also used as a wedding venue; the Eisenberg is one of the "Seelenorte" (places of the soul) of the Sauerland.
